2 steps to get into the blogging mindset
You’ve decided to start a baking blog or website for your cake biz. You’ve chosen your domain name and website hosting. You’re ready to go.
But now what?
You know that having an online presence is a vital and time effective way to grow an audience or customer base for your bakes, but now you’ve hit a big brick wall and don’t know where to go next.
Blogging can seem a daunting thing to try because it’s public, it’s out there for all to see. You might not be coming from a professional writing background – you might not even like writing that much. These things can leave you feeling unconfident and deflated. Can you even make blogging work for your baking dreams or cake business?
Of course you can!
The road blocks you’re currently facing mainly relate to a lack of confidence, so you worry you have no ideas of what to write about or that your blog posts will end up like cakes with soggy bottoms.
Confidence comes with practice. The sooner you dive in and share your first post, you’ll get into the blogging mindset and the next one will feel far simpler.
To help you get off to a flying start and really show the best of your baking, here are my two favourite tried-and-tested tips to get the blogging mindset.

Take the time to mind map
Even seasoned bloggers will sometimes find it hard to start from a blank laptop screen. To get into the blogging mindset and let the blog post flow, don’t start to write a post until you have an idea and a plan in mind.
Spend 30 minutes once a week collecting ideas for new blog posts for your baking business or dream.
If the aim of your blog is to win you new customers, create posts that show off your expertise, include testimonials from your happy customers, and provide your customers with the information they want to know. A gallery of cake photos is also a must.
For example, if you run a cake business selling to local cafes (or dream of doing it) target your blog posts at showing off your fabulous cakes and at busy café owners. A post idea could be ‘why you should outsource for your café’s cakes’ or a case study of a café who started stocking your cakes with rave reviews.
Mind mapping ideas and planning your blog post beforehand allows you to do the research, take the photographs, and collect the reviews you need to write it easily and impress your readers.
The writing process will feel so much simpler, you’ll soon be comfortable in your new blogging mindset.
Proofread and edit your work
Once you’ve created your content happily, you’ll be rushing to press publish and send it out to your readers or email list of clients. Hold on.
You’ve got the building blocks of a brilliant blog post that will boost your confidence and attract your ideal reader or customer, but you haven’t polished them.
If you opened a bakery, you wouldn’t rush to open the doors just because the bakery was built and the furniture was in. You’d double check all the glass was clean, the cake displays elegant, the leaflets by the till tidy.
Do the same for your blog posts.
Once you’ve written them, save them as a draft. Once you’ve had a break from writing and distracted your mind with something else, come back and re-read the post.
Is it easy to read? Does it do what the title says it will? Are there any typos?
Checking these small details will give you blog post a polished look. It will appear much more professionally to your readers, extending your professional cake business image and proving the quality of your work. The confidence boost a quality post gives you will keep you securely in the a positive blogging mindset.
